Delrin Machined Parts for Photonics

Material:Black Delrin (Acetal / POM)

Finish:Machined with Matte Surface for Optical Compatibility

This high-precision part is machined from black Delrin (POM), a durable engineering plastic known for its dimensional stability, low friction, and excellent wear resistance. The black finish helps minimize light reflection, making it ideal for photonics and laser applications.

Rollyu Precision is dedicated to the high-precision CNC machining of Black Delrin (Acetal/POM) components, with a focus on applications in photonicsoptics, and laser-based systems. These custom components are known for their dimensional stabilitylow friction, and high strength, making them a reliable choice for optical mountslaser assemblies, and alignment fixtures where performance and precision are critical.

By employing multi-axis CNC machining, we ensure each part meets strict tolerance and surface finish requirements demanded by modern optical and photonics assemblies. The black finish of Delrin not only enhances appearance but also reduces light reflection—crucial in laser and optoelectronic equipment. Its excellent machinability and wear resistance make Delrin a dependable material for demanding environments.

With certifications in ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 13485:2016, our facility is equipped to handle both prototype development and small-batch production, offering full traceability and consistent quality. We support clients across sectors such as medical opticsaerospacefiber communications, and scientific research.

In addition to machining, we offer services such as CAD/CAM supportsurface finishing, and assembly to support your project from concept to completion.

4-Axis CNC Machining, CNC Milling, CNC Cutting, CNC Drilling, Tapping

Material Selection and Preparation Raw material in black Delrin rod or sheet stock is chosen based on dimensions, mechanical properties, and intended tolerances.
Stock is cut to size using band saw or circular saw before machining.
CNC Machining Setup 3-axis or 5-axis CNC milling or turning machines are prepped depending on part geometry.
Workholding fixtures are selected to avoid deformation, as Delrin is softer than metals.
Tools such as carbide end mills and high-speed steel drills are preferred.
Machining Process Facing, milling, and turning: to shape the external geometry.
Drilling and boring: for internal features such as holes or counterbores.
Threading or tapping: when threaded features are required.
Feeds and speeds are optimized to avoid melting or burring due to Delrin’s low melting point (~175°C).
Deburring and Cleaning Manual or ultrasonic cleaning to remove chips and burrs.
Compressed air or alcohol wipes are used to avoid chemical residue.
Quality Inspection Dimensional inspection using CMM, calipers, micrometers.
Surface roughness and cosmetic quality check.
Functional test (if applicable) for moving or load-bearing parts.
Optional Post-Processing Laser engraving: for logos, part numbers, or indicators.
Assembly: if part of a larger mechanical system.
Packaging: protective packaging to prevent deformation during shipping.

Custom CNC machined black Delrin (acetal) parts play a critical role in the precision engineering and assembly of high-performance photonic and optical systems. Thanks to their light-absorbing matte finishdimensional stability, and non-metallic properties, black Delrin components are widely used in the following domains:

FAQ

Why is black Delrin commonly used in photonics and optical systems?

Black Delrin (acetal homopolymer) offers excellent dimensional stabilitylow moisture absorption, and good machinability, making it ideal for precision optical mounts and housings. Its black pigmentation also reduces light reflection and scatter, which is essential in laser alignment, imaging, and optical isolation applications.

What kinds of components can be CNC machined from black Delrin?

We custom machine a wide range of optical and photonics parts including:

  • Lens holders and barrels
  • Laser apertures and isolators
  • Optomechanical mounts and brackets
  • Spacer rings and light baffles
Delrin’s stiffness and stability make it suitable for tight tolerance assemblies.
What tolerances can be achieved with CNC machined Delrin parts?

Our CNC machining process can maintain tolerances of ±0.025 mm (±0.001 inch) or better, depending on part geometry. Delrin’s dimensional stability ensures minimal deformation during and after machining, which is critical in optical alignment and sensor positioning systems.

Does black Delrin outgas or degrade in laser or vacuum applications?

Black Delrin is low outgassing and chemically stable under most ambient conditions, but it’s not recommended for high-vacuum or high-heat environments. For moderate laser system housings or optical bench components, it performs well. If ultra-low outgassing is required, we recommend PTFE, PEEK, or anodized aluminum.

Can you support prototyping and low-volume production for photonics startups or R&D labs?

Absolutely. We specialize in low-to-medium volume production, with fast turnaround on prototypes and custom parts for photonics OEMs, research institutes, and advanced imaging startups. We offer material certifications, CMM inspection, and full 3D model support to accelerate development cycles.
