CNC Lathe Turning, CNC Mill-Turning, Lathe, Turning, CNC Cutting, CNC Drilling, Tapping

Raw Material Selection & Preparation High-purity AISI 304 stainless steel bar stock is selected based on required diameter, length, and mechanical specs.
Bars are cut to length using precision saws (cold saw or band saw).
Ends are faced and cleaned for concentric clamping in turning machines.
CNC Lathe Turning Operations Performed on high-precision CNC lathes with live tooling if secondary milling is needed.
Rough Turning
Material is cylindrically turned down close to final dimensions.
Achieves a uniform outer diameter and removes surface scale or irregularities.
Finish Turning
Final passes are made to achieve tight tolerances (±0.005 mm – ±0.01 mm).
Surface finish is controlled to meet Ra ≤ 1.6 µm (or as specified).
Critical spindle features such as shaft steps, shoulders, or journal fits are machined.
Grooving, Threading, or Chamfering (if required)
Threads, O-ring grooves, or locking features are lathe-turned as per customer drawing.
Chamfered or radiused edges ensure smooth fit and ease of assembly.
Secondary Machining (If Applicable) If spindle has flats, keyways, or cross-holes, the part may undergo:
Milling (3-axis or 5-axis CNC)
Gun drilling or deep-hole boring
Broaching or EDM for key features
Surface Treatment (Optional) Passivation: Enhances corrosion resistance by removing surface contaminants
Polishing or Grinding: Achieves mirror-like surface or sub-micron accuracy for journal bearings
Bead blasting: For matte, non-reflective finishes in sensor applications
Inspection & Quality Control Dimensional checks using micrometers, CMMs, and runout testers
Concentricity, roundness, and shaft diameter measured to ensure smooth rotation
Surface roughness testing if required by drawing
✅ Spindles used in motion control must rotate smoothly, align precisely, and withstand dynamic loads.
Packaging & Documentation Protective packaging to avoid scratches during transport
Supplied with material certificates, RoHS/REACH compliance, and full inspection reports
Serialized if needed for traceability in regulated industries (e.g., medical, aerospace)

FAQ

Why is AISI 304 stainless steel suitable for motion control system spindles?

AISI 304 offers a strong balance of mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, and machinability, making it ideal for spindles operating in motion control systems. It performs reliably in cleanroom, automation, and humid environments, ensuring long-term durability and minimal maintenance.

What are the key performance requirements for CNC-turned spindles in motion systems?

Precision spindles must meet strict criteria for:

  • Dimensional accuracy(typically ±0.01 mm or better)
  • Concentricity and roundness
  • Smooth surface finish (Ra ≤ 0.8 µm)
  • Axial and radial load tolerance
These characteristics ensure stable rotation, minimal vibration, and accurate linear or rotary motion.
Do you provide custom spindle designs with features like threading, cross-holes, or keyways?

Yes. We manufacture fully custom spindles with optional features such as:

  • Internal/external threading
  • Cross-drilled holes
  • Milled flats or keyways
  • Custom flange or shaft ends
Each spindle is machined to exact specifications using multi-axis lathes and live tooling setups.
What surface treatments or finishing processes are available for these spindles?

To enhance corrosion resistance and performance, we offer:

  • Passivation (ASTM A967 / AMS 2700)
  • Electropolishing for ultra-smooth surfaces
  • Grinding and polishing for tight-tolerance shafts
These finishes are critical for smooth motion, bearing fitment, and surface wear reduction.
What quality controls are in place for motion control spindles?

Each spindle undergoes:

  • 100% dimensional inspection using CMM and micrometers
  • Concentricity and runout checks
  • Material certification (304 SS, 303SS, etc)
  • ISO 9001 and ISO 13485-compliant manufacturing processes
Optional PPAP and SPC data are available for OEM clients in automation, robotics, and motion control industries.
